Meitheal

Picture
Meitheal is a space to bring together local skills and knowledge to encourage responsible consumption, address climate change and promote a resilient and sustainable community. We want to build on the existing positive work of our community and give it space to flourish.

The old Irish word meitheal - meaning team - describes the Irish tradition where people in rural communities gathered together on a neighbour’s farm to help each other out, especially at times of harvest or in a crisis. Each person would help their neighbour, who would in turn reciprocate. They acted as a team and everybody benefited in some way.  This same principle would apply to sharing tools etc. and was a part of the ethos behind the establishment of The Exchange as a community centre.  Now we hope to build and expand on that vision to provide impetus and encouragement for a range of projects such as skills sharing, a "Library of Things"  and more.

Our Meitheal values are:
  • Share - sharing knowledge, skills and resources
  • Support - helping one another and working together on projects that benefit one another.
  • Sustain - moving towards a more sustainable future as a community

Starting in February 2021 (with grateful thanks for the support of the Seeds of Change programme from ChangeMakers, Donegal), we will be running a series of free online workshops and will launch our "Library of Things".

We're excited to announce that our second workshop on Saturday 13 March at 11am on Zoom with a practical "How To" session on home decorating with Don Mc Guinness.  The workshop is free and will not last more than a hour.
While locked down, maybe you have been staring at those walls, thinking they need refreshing or maybe a change of colour. Ask your questions and let Don's advice inspire you to DIY! Email us on if you want to attend and we'll make sure you get the Zoom link. This is the second workshop (following from our recent EcoBricking workshop) to launch the Exchange's Meitheal project!
